Ghost Dance shields were part of the dancer's regalia, they were not for war. They were made of muslin or cotton since bison leather was not longer available. The Ghost Dance cult took place during the late 19th Century. By that time, the large herds of buffaloes were all but gone forever. They were replaced by cows, and the open prairies were tamed with long barbed wire fences. The good days were over, and the freedom of the Plains Indians reminded only in memories
